Eye health systems assessment

Connecting eye care with general health systems

Eye Health Systems AssessmentFollowing the success of the Health Systems Assessment (HSA) approach, a consortium of eye care and health experts, coordinated by ICEH, has developed the Eye Health Systems Assessment (EHSA) approach. It works as a complement to the HSA.

Improving eye care interventions

Increasing effort has been invested in exploring the relationship between the eye health system and the general health system.

A consensus is emerging in the international eye care community that the effectiveness of eye care interventions can only be improved through better understanding of how health systems function.

The aim of the EHSA approach

In parallel with the HSA approach, the EHSA approach is designed to provide a rapid but comprehensive assessment of key health systems functions and how they interact with the eye care system. This includes:

  • Financing
  • Service delivery
  • Human resources
  • Medical products
  • Vaccines and technologies
  • Information systems

The EHSA How-To Manual

This focuses on a list of indicators or questions used to measure the performance of the eye health system. It also includes sources of relevant information.
