ICEH Alumni Symposium Event

The ICEH Alumni Symposium Event took place on October 29, 2016 at the Southern Sun Elengeni & Maharani Hotel in Durban, South Africa. It was scheduled as a satellite meeting during the, 10th General Assembly (10GA) of the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). The 10GA is the premier global event discussing public health topics related to blindness & visual impairment and takes place every four years. Amongst the 1,100 global delegates attending 10GA were over 100 ICEH alumni who are leaders in the field and were key note speakers, chairs of several sections of the academic programme and responsible for many oral and poster presentations.

A strong 110 Alumni representing ICEH MSc Public Health for Eye Care (formerly titled, MSc Community Eye Health) attended the event. This was the largest ICEH/LSHTM alumni reunion to date.

ICEH Alumni Event
Following the IAPB 10GA theme of “Stronger together”: All ICEH alumni from the MSc, Diploma and Certificate attending 10GA were invited to an Alumni Event consisting of a symposium and dinner. Attendance coming from the very first course offered in 1981 to the current 2016 cohort we have over 650+ alumni!

The event was divided in two parts:

  1. Symposium: “Stronger together”: A selection of alumni-led research, education and partnerships in Public Health for Eye Care were presented under the theme “Stronger together”.
  2. ICEH Staff & Alumni Dinner: A formal dinner for ICEH alumni and staff, by invitation only. This will enable further networking both for mentorship and generation of new research and education collaborations.

The objectives of the Symposium/Event:

  1. To promote the education work of ICEH and LSHTM to a specialist audience of global eye care workers from low and middle-income countries.
  2. To strengthen current collaborations and partnerships in research and education between institutions where the alumni work and ICEH/LSHTM.
