The Webinar

Around the world, more than 100 million people are currently affected by sight loss due to cataract. Most cataracts can be treated with a safe and affordable 15-minute surgery, yet half of all people with the condition have no access to services.

On February 11th 2026, the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) and the World Health Organisation held two webinars to discuss the publication of two key pieces of research in cataract, alongside new guidelines by WHO. More than 600 people from the eye health world and beyond attended the sessions over different timezones, coming together to discuss the future of global cataract care and research. Read more about the data here and access recordings from the webinars below.

Highlights

Professor Matthew Burton discusses a new Lancet Global Health paper, revealing global estimates for effective cataract surgical coverage, including the key findings that by 2030 global eCSC is projected to only increase by 8.4 percentage points, rather than the 30 point target set by the World Health Assembly.

Professor Andrew Bastawrous discusses a new Lancet Healthy Longevity paper, that uses Kenya as a case study to find that 77% of people currently with vision impairment from cataract will die without ever receiving treatment.

Dr Stuart Keel outlines new guidelines from the World Health Organisation that provide a template for countries to improve quality of care in cataract surgery management.
