The International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine has been officially designated as a new WHO Collaborating Centre for Eye Care and Vision.
The World Health Organization and ICEH have worked together closely for many years on shared goals for improving eye health, particularly in data, research, and capacity strengthening.
This new designation formalises the partnership and provides a framework for collaboration.
Some of the activities covered by the designation include:
- Assisting WHO in the collection, analysis and reporting of population eye health data, including monitoring of the WHO 2030 targets for cataract (eCSC) and refractive error (eREC)
- ICEH will collate, curate and analyse data to produce national estimates for the indicators, while providing technical coordination for the means to collect data through RAAB surveys
- Supporting WHO in developing evidence to improve global eye health, including epidemiology, intervention strategies, economic evaluations and evidence synthesis
- ICEH is the technical partner for WHO’s global eye health research agenda prioritisation project
- ICEH will also conduct implementation / intervention research on subjects relevant to WHO’s agenda and develop standard methodologies for health economics studies
- Supporting WHO in strengthening the eye health workforce, with a particular emphasis on public health training and capacity strengthening
- ICEH will provide training opportunities through its MSc in Public Health for Eye Care course, free online training courses, and publication of the Community Eye Health Journal
We are delighted to be working together with WHO on these shared aims and continuing to improve eye health globally.
